DIY Wellness Plan for Behaviour Modification

Obedience is a form of control when we are not sure how to communicate, when we are disconnected in some way.  Yes, obedience is an important life skill for a dog, but we don’t teach it until we have taught communication first.  Obedience is the equivalent of academics for people.  We don’t judge the quality of a person on their academic achievements, we look at what kind of person they are.
Are they kind and compassionate or are they mean and hurtful?
Do they communicate well or are they short and/or abrasive?
Are they patient and understanding or are they rude and pushy?
Do they do things for the benefit of their families and community or are they self-centered?
We judge our dogs on a similar set of principles.

We do not teach obedience-only training programs.

Puppy Boarding School

Pack socialization, behaviour & training!  Prepare your pup for real world experiences.

Ideally for puppies 4-6 months but beneficial for any puppy at any age. Puppy Boarding School offers 7 or 14 days of full immersion training.  The opportunity to learn from a well-balanced pack is a sure step in the right direction to having a well-socialized dog.

The primary focus of Boarding School is healthy dog to dog socialization sprinkled with daily outings, Adventure Hikes and basic obedience training.

Your puppy will live in our home with a balanced pack of adult dogs who can help your puppy learn appropriate social interactions, because nobody teaches dog play better than another dog.

SAVE YOUR SPOT!  Spaces are limited to 1 puppy at a time.
We love puppies and puppy play is one of the cutest things in the world, but adult dogs don't play the same as puppies so it is important that they learn what is acceptable among adult dogs to help them develop healthy mature social behaviours.

You're not just raising a puppy, you are raising the dog you want to have in the future

No need to wait for a new start date.  Class runs continuously and you can join as soon as you get your puppy.

A puppies most impressionable time is between birth and 16 weeks of age. That is when they need to be exposed to as many sights, sounds, smells and stimuli as possible! But we're told to avoid dog parks, pet stores and high traffic areas until they are fully vaccinated, typically at 16 weeks, meaning we miss the critical imprinting period.
Studies have now shown that dogs are more at risk of being euthanized because of behaviour problems linked to lack of socialization than they are of contracting a deadly disease before being fully vaccinated. While each option has it's pros and cons, we strongly believe that providing a safe environment for puppies socialization is the best solution.
To ensure the safety of the puppies in the group, all puppies must be up to date on their vaccines (8-12-16 weeks) but are not required to be fully vaccinated.
Class is open to puppies 8 weeks - 5 months.

Puppy Preschool is full of socialization, fun activities, sensory games, relationship building exercises, house training tips, and a little bit of basic obedience +PLUS virtual training.

Here is some great info about puppy socialization from the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour.

Behavior Basics

We help you and your dog learn to communicate together.

We all have this dream that when we get a dog we will have this harmonious lifestyle together.  We can just hang out together, adventure together and that they will be the perfect fit for our family.

Maybe that's not how things turned out...

Now you are feeling frustrated your dog's begging.
                                         your dog's leash-reactivity.
                                          your dog's excessive barking.
your dog bouncing off the walls, unable to relax.                                                                         your dog's rude behavior when you have guests over.

Are you feeling defeated because the vision you had of having the perfect dog is slipping away and being replaced by your frustration at their bad behaviour?

You are not alone!

This is when most people seek out an obedience class, to learn how to control unruly dogs.

But we know that obedience is simply just that, control.  We aren't saying that having control of your dog is a bad thing, it's not.  But we know that you want a dog that can just BE!  Not a dog that needs for you to control them with a sit, down or heel command.

Only a small percentage of problems are solved by obedience because having a well-behaved dog and a well-trained dog are two very different things.

Obedience is task-training and a well-trained dog is good at following instructions to perform the tasks that have been taught.

Behaviour is how your dog CHOOSES acts when they are not in a command.  Behaviour is what your dog does when you aren't telling them what to do. Or when there is food on the table, a knock at the door, or while passing another dog on the street.

This is the vision that dog owners have when they get their dog! The dog who chooses to BEHAVE well.  And we want to help you get back on track to having the relationship your dreamed of with your dog.
Our Behavior Basics program teaches you:
-How to create calmness with your dog
-The language of dogs and how to interpret what they are trying to tell you
-Relationship bonding exercises and experiences

-How to communicate to your dog in a way that the dog understands (don't worry, it doesn't include barking)
-How to help your dog learn to make good choices without being told
-Basic Obedience necessary for real life interactions
- ...and more!

Your Behaviour Basics includes:

Rover Rehab - Not just for aggressive dogs

Your dog isn't giving you a hard time, your dog is having a hard time.

Rover Rehab is a 2-week Board & Train available to clients who have completed our Complete Canine program.  It's not only for dog's struggling with aggression, it's for all dogs and handlers who want to give their dog the best.  From happy-go-lucky to aggressive, busy-bodies to timid dogs, each Board & Train is individually tailored making it a great learning experience for all dogs.

The truth is that serious behaviour problems, such as aggression, separation anxiety or even extreme friendliness, aren't just bad behaviour.  It is usually an addiction.

Addiction is a disease of brain reward, motivation and memory. It affects neurotransmission and interactions within the reward structures of the brain.

It makes sense that all of the obedience training you've already done with your dog hasn't improved his behaviour troubles.  You probably have a dog who can hold a Down-Stay command like a champ, but as soon as he sees another dog, he loses his mind. Or you exercise your dog before leaving him yet he still howls and destroys your house when you leave.  You're left feeling frustrated and confused. You've tried everything!  Why is he still doing this?  WHY.

Meanwhile your dog is feeling proud of himself. That happy tail is wagging, his sweet ears are perked up and he has a goofy grin on his face.

The brain is pattern seeking and when he blew up at the dog walking past the house, he completed a pattern that has been established in his brain. Now that the pattern was completed, there was a release of dopamine and he is on a high, until he realizes how mad you are.

BUT, no matter now mad you get, no matter what type of reward you offer or what type of punishment you give, his brain still needs to complete that pattern. That pattern is what makes these bad behaviours an addiction.

The good news is addictions can be treated.  Did you notice that we said treated and not cured?
That's because there is no 28-day cure for addictions. There is no cure.
Rehabilitation is the process of getting the problem under control. After rehab, lifelong management, maintenance and treatment are still necessary.

How does this relate to you and your dog?

Complete Canine gives you the skills and knowledge to help your dog but sometimes that isn't enough and you both need a break from each other.

Rover Rehab is a 2 week immersive program for your dog to live in-home with our canine behaviourist and a stable pack.  This integrated canine behaviour therapy offers your dog a new environment and a clean slate to implement everything you have been working on with your dog through your Complete Canine program.

Rover Rehab is not exclusive to dogs struggling with aggression.

Rehabilitation is the act of restoring something to its original state, such as rehabilitating a forest. Or physiotherapy rehabilitation after an injury.  It doesn't have to be associated with addictions but the premise is still the same; Rome wasn't built overnight.  True rehabilitation is a long process, it is in-depth, individual and thoroughly planned.  This is why our memberships include Packwalks and Socials, to ensure long-term support after you've completed your program.

Just like rehab for an alcoholic does not involve sending them to a bar and then punishing them for taking a drink, rehab for a dog is not about punishing their mistakes either (yes, their mistakes will be addressed but simply punishing them won't resolve the problem.)

Rehab is about providing a healthy environment that will allow the brain to create new thought patterns and build new neuropathways.  It's a safe place to therapeutically work through problems and triggers and to learn a new skill set.

Here is just a little more information about addictions in people.  It has some great information that you will find relevant to your dog.
